As a Pennsylvania-based hospital system continued to expand its network, it faced challenges with maintaining existing life safety systems while simultaneously upgrading to more integrated, sophisticated technology. The hospital’s existing system included outdated equipment, such as a 20-year-old AC coded bell system, which needed to be kept in place. The new equipment had to be backwards compatible in order to connect to these older systems.

With staff and patients rotating in and out of the hospital’s three million square foot campus every day, hospital leaders were tasked with finding a partner capable of designing, constructing and integrating a new solution that could help the network grow over the next 20 to 30 years. Implementing new fire and security systems

First, Johnson Controls needed to identify backwards-compatible security, fire and life safety systems to install alongside the existing systems. The company installed the Simplex 4120 Network with Voice throughout the majority of the campus. Not only does this technology help pinpoint the exact location of an alarm and report the alarm to other systems, but the voice capabilities also provide communication to patients and staff in the event of a fire.

In addition to the fire alarm system, Johnson Controls implemented and maintained several hundred integrated cameras and access control doors in the hospital’s facilities. All of the systems are monitored and controlled at a central command center to help improve response times in emergency situations. This setup allows the security team to view and control occupant movement across the network at all times to help boost safety efforts. Johnson Controls was involved in the design process to ensure protection was built in upfront so as not to delay construction and to avoid costly change orders.

With the newly installed systems compatible with older systems, the Pennsylvania hospital network has gained the ability to continually expand existing equipment as the hospital grows while codes continue to change. The central monitoring location has increased team efficiencies and helped lower maintenance costs.
